The power levels and wavelengths found in common fiber systems range from 50 nanowatts (nW) to 10 milliwatts (mW), as shown in the table, below. While this may not sound like a lot of wattage, keep in mind Network Cabling this light can potentially pump through a fiber that's only 9 millionths of a meter (microns) in diameter. Even at these low levels of power, that's a fairly high level of watts per square centimeter.
Indoor/outdoor rated tight buffered cables have riser and plenum rated versions. These cables are flexible, easy to handle and simple to install. Since they do not use gel, the connectors can be terminated directly onto the 900um fiber without difficult-to-use kits. This provides an easy and overall less expensive installation.
Shielded twisted pair has a very specific use, and there is an extra cost associated with it. So most people use Un-shielded Twisted Pair or UTP. There's no shielding inside of it. You see, there's no foil or shielding around any of the pairs inside of this. It is probably the most common type of cable you're going to find.
Tight buffer coating (tight buffer cables like simplex, zipcord, distribution and breakout types): A soft protective coating applied directly to the 250 micron coated fiber to provide additional protection for the fiber, allowing easier handling, even direct termination on the fiber.
